Selrisitai Perfect Grey is a band whose genre is tough for me personally to pin down. You know punk-pop bands in the vein of Creed and Anberlin and 3 Doors Down?

Well, if you took that and made it metal instead of punk, threw in some power metal and progressive flavors, give us a full-voiced singer with a three-octave range, both clean and gritty vocals, and made every track catchy and melodic with a melancholic flair, well. . . you're most of the way there, I reckon.

Consistent. Highly recommended.

Aion-6 is honestly closer to power metal than melodic death, but one can't argue the inclusion of both. This is a quite rare combination of styles in such denominations, with Raintime being one of the few parallels I can comfortably draw. With meaty, rocking riffs fighting for dominance against '80s synths and gritty impassioned vocals, Perfect Grey sounds quite polished and surgical, and is unsurprisingly redolent of many other Russian modern metal acts. They all seem to share a particular aesthetic concerning the synths, which in this band's case lean more toward Children of Bodom, insofar as there is a fair balance between spearheading leads and atmospheric backing diffusion. Containing elements shared by Blood Stain Child, Timecry, Naildown, Emergency Gate, Illidiance and Disarmonia Mundi, the potential for something memorable is certainly tangible.

First, the vocals are actually very distinctive and powerful. I'm not sure if Sena Diezy is responsible for all manner of growls alongside the cleans, but he is seriously resourceful if that is the case. The harsh shouting never truly really finds a comfortable spot, instead deviating from straight-up gutturals to a more sneering pseudo-snarl. It's a decent performance concerning that alone, but the singing is naturally more memorable. The cleans are a bit reedy and rough-hewn, but the melodies themselves are rather poignant and moving, like on "Out of Heaven." His accent isn't particularly distracting, and the performance is very honest. "Out of Heaven" is worth focusing on in detail, because it is one of many strong efforts by keyboardist Stolyarov, who has a great personal style, evoking an arousing nostalgic vibe with gently layered harmonies and moving note progressions. Add to these two the melodic rock/metal rhythm section and its proclivity to carve a more anthemic slant on tunes like "Far Away," and Perfect Grey is starting to look pretty good.

There are no bad songs here either, with the band locked into their power metal side for most of the duration. Heavier riffs certainly make appearances like the clinical thrashing drive of "Doesn't Matter." Even when it seems like the band is going to go for the throat for an entire song, an awesome chorus comes around to remind you of their versatility. Both extremes are satiated, and the melodies are some of the strongest I've ever come across. The vocals can be somewhat overbearing at times, especially with the oft-overwhelming dichotomy between the styles implemented, but I found it somewhat refreshing. The guitarists occasionally mete out melodic hooks alongside punctuated and eloquent acoustic tones and upbeat power metal riffs.

Wow, Perfect Grey is pretty great, and definitely worth a look if you enjoyed Raintime. That is the most accurate comparison I have come across so far. With powerful, clear and destructive riffs alongside brilliant atmospheric keys, the fusion of melodeath and power metal is proven to be exemplary yet again. Just a damn fun album, with a greater mass appeal than most. The closer "Above the Clouds" is a huge highlight, as well as "Insanity in Me," which seems to encapsulate the album as a whole on its own. A great power metal album, really.
